If you believe you are experiencing the symptoms of a TMJ disorder, treatment with Dr. Schrader in Sierra Vista may be necessary for your oral health and peace of mind.

What Causes TMJ?

There is no particular cause for TMJ disorders, but some patients who have experienced injury to the jaw, surrounding joints, or face and neck muscles, such as whiplash, have acquired TMJ as a result. TMJ has also been linked to bruxism (or teeth grinding), misaligned bite positions, arthritis, and stress.

Typically, those with TMJ will experience severe pain in areas of the face, jaw, neck, or shoulders and have trouble chewing, speaking, or opening their mouths altogether.

TMJ Treatment and NightGuard Therapy in Sierra Vista

To diagnose TMJ, Dr. Schrader will first examine your bite position for alignment and check the temporomandibular joint for any dislocation. In most cases, TMJ issues can be traced back to an imbalanced bite.

Treatment for TMJ will involve a NightGuard, which consists of a plastic mouthpiece that fits over the teeth, creating a barrier in between the upper and lower jaw. A NightGuard will alleviate jaw clenching or teeth grinding and can correct a misaligned bite by placing teeth in a proper position.

Dr. Schrader will take impressions of your upper and lower teeth and send them off to a laboratory where the NightGuard will be crafted. As the name implies, the mouthpiece is worn while you sleep and works to lessen TMJ issues. Once you receive your NightGuard, it is important to wear it every night in order to see results.
